8 Executing an Execution Configuration

8.1 Execution Configurations
8.2 Baseline Executions

An Execution Configuration can be run to generate schedules. A Run defined in an Execution Configuration will be carried out to either produce schedules randomly, or using Guidance, or through optimization (learning), or according to Baseline schedules imported from third party software. Executions can be set to only continue if the Capacity Constraints contained in the Execution Configuration are feasible by using the Verify capacities settings. An Execution can also be set to run on multiple logical cores.

8.1 Execution Configurations

To Execute an Execution Configuration,

  1. Open the Project Menu by clicking on Project.
  2. Select Execute from the Project Menu options.

  3. An Execute dialog window will open. Select from the Execution Configuration drop-down list the Execution Configuration to Execute.

    image535

  4. Once an Execution Configuration is selected the Execution Name will be automatically populated with the configuration name. Adjust or change the Execution’s name in the Execution Name field.

Note: Duplicate names are not allowed. SOT v3 will append a number to the name if a duplicate is detected.

  1. To check that the Capacity Constraints set in the Execution Configuration are feasible for activities contained in the SOT project click the Verify capacities checkbox.

When the Verify capacities option is enabled, a Capacity Analysis will be conducted prior to executing the Execution Configuration to assess whether the Capacity Constraints configured in the Execution are feasible. If the Capacity Analysis determines the Capacity Constraints are feasible then the Execution will begin and schedules will be generated. If the Capacity Analysis determines any Capacity Constraint is infeasible then no Execution will be conducted and an error message will open outlining which constraint(s) are unachievable.

If the Verify capacities option is not selected and an Execution Configuration containing infeasible Capacity Constraint settings is Executed then SOT will attempt to schedule activities and will find that activities subject to the infeasible Capacity Constraint are un-schedulable. The results will populate the Results table but with an incomplete schedule reporting un-scheduled activities. The entry in the results table will be shaded red where there are unscheduled activities.

  1. To add the Execution to the Execution Queue but not allow it to run yet, enable the Pause on queue option by checking the checkbox.

  2. Input the number of logical cores to use when Executing by entering any number between 1 and 4 into the # of threads field.

  3. Click OK to begin the Execution and generate schedules. The Current Execution or Queue window will open.

8.2 Baseline Executions

Baseline Executions will generate the schedule as it was imported into SOT. SOT uses activity Start dates along with any activity Splits from the imported schedule to generate a Baseline schedule. SOT Capacity Constraints are ignored. SOT financial settings contained in the selected Execution Configuration will be used to calculate and report the SOT financials for the Baseline schedule.

To Execute a Baseline Execution,

  1. Open the Project Menu by clicking on Project.
  2. Select Execute from the Project Menu options.

  3. An Execute dialog window will open. Select from the Execution Configuration drop-down list the Execution Configuration to Execute.

    image539

  4. Once an Execution Configuration is selected the Execution Name will be automatically populated with the configuration name. Adjust or change the Execution’s name in the Execution Name field.

    image540

  5. To Execute the Baseline schedule imported when the project was created click the Baseline run checkbox.

When conducting a Baseline Run, the number of threads defined will be ignored.

  1. Click OK to begin the Execution and generate a Baseline schedule. The Current Execution or Queue window will open.
