Introducing SOT Logo COL– Revolution’s Schedule Optimization Tool

SOT assists with mining plan development, strategy and evaluation for the long-term planning of underground mines. SOT is applied once development openings have been specified, individual stopes have been identified over a block model and orebody extraction has been turned into a set of mining activities. Each mining activity has properties such as mineral grades, tonnage, length and equipment required, so that costs and revenues can be associated correctly, and constraints related to fleet sizes or manpower requirements can be enforced by SOT’s scheduler. Certain activities also have precedence links to other mining activities; for example, a stope cannot be extracted before its access point is created. These precedence constraints are also enforced by SOT.

The optimized schedule of activities effectively forms a mining plan that maximizes the value of the orebody, based on the development and stoping activities. SOT can solve problem instances that are intractable with exact optimization methods. The value is that SOT 3.0 generates in minutes an optimized schedule, adhering to all operational resource constraints, for thousands of activities.

How SOT Logo COL works

SOT uses the underground mine design as input, i.e., the set of development and stoping activities including precedence links between activities. On import, each mining activity has defined properties such as duration, length, weight, product grades, activity types and mine area. SOT, through its user interface, is then aligned with the scenarios to be evaluated. The primary components of a scenario usually consist of operational resources and capacities as well as the financial model, including the discount rate, projected product prices, operating costs, and capital costs. Based on the mine design and the scenarios, SOT uses custom heuristics and a unique evolutionary algorithm to optimize the net present value of the long-term mine schedule.

New inSOT Logo COL3.0

SOT v3 introduces several new features and a brand new look to the Schedule Optimization Tool. This version offers a complete update of the underlying code for better performance, improved memory usage, and a more stable program.


  • User Interface. The interface for SOT v3 offers a cleaner look and feel, with items easier to find. From importing projects to viewing results, the entire user interface has been redesigned.
  • Assignment of Types. SOT v3 will no longer constrain you to types and units selected on import. You can now set and change these associations as needed.
  • Equipment. One of the biggest changes to the functionality of SOT v3 relates to equipment. Equipment quantities and capacities have now been integrated for better performance and ease of use. Further, SOT v3 now gives the option to specify alternative equipment sets.
  • View Resource Allocation. You can easily view how SOT v3 assigned your resources throughout the mine life.
  • Activity Filters. Activity Types have been replaced with Activity Filters. You can now filter by any text field and value in order to flexibly apply a number of properties, from setting objectives, costs, and equipment, to the new ability to assign weight and length fields selectively.
  • Activity Splits. SOT v3 can now split tasks in order to schedule priority tasks earlier in the mine life while adhering to capacity constraints.
  • Guidance. SOT v3 now allows multiple Guidance Types and/or various Intensity amounts to be configured in one Execution.
  • New Objective.In addition to the objectives in SOT v2 (maximize NPV or maximize peak NPV), SOT v3 includes a new objective - maximizing a schedule’s profitability index.
  • Multi-Core. SOT v3 can run on up to 4 processor cores, allowing for reduced run times.
  • Baseline Executions. SOT v3 can now conveniently reproduce an imported schedule, for quick financial and resource analysis, and for a baseline comparison with optimized schedules.
